The biggest barrier to tomorrow is today.
People like me who struggle with weight, addicts who struggle with substance abuse, and Republicans who struggle with government growth all have something in common: a regular routine of putting off until tomorrow what we ought to do today.
I see myself doing it with my diet. My internal dialog sounds like this: “I need to begin eating healthier. But this week is the Big Butler Fair, and fair food is the best! I’ll begin later.”
My friends who struggle with addiction have similar dialogs: “I know I need to give up this habit, but I’m going through too much right now. I will quit later.”
A Republican recently told me that he recognizes my advantage on every issue important to him, but “now is not the time to let the Democrats win.”
This type of thinking keeps fat people fat, addicts addicted, and the American government bloated and continually growing.
I know exactly how the Republican Party will appear in fifteen years. It will resemble the Democratic Party of today. As an avid student of US history, I can say this with confidence. In the 1930s, Republicans opposed New Deal programs. By the 1950s, they were “New Dealers” who simply wanted to maintain the integrity of those programs. In the 1960s, Republicans opposed Great Society programs. By the 1980s, they were only interested in “reforming” those programs.
It is even more obvious today: Republicans back Donald Trump and Dave McCormick, both former Democrats. Today’s Republican leaders are literally yesterday’s Democrats!
In 2040, someone like Bob Casey will be a Republican, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be a moderate Democrat, and a far-left progressive Democrat will be someone like Che Guevara.
By 2060, Republicans will be nominating a Bernie Sanders for President!
It doesn’t have to be this way. But the overweight guy will stay fat if every day is "not today." The addict will stay hooked if he never turns the corner and commits to breaking his addiction. And the Republican who thinks he can't afford to vote for his principles because he has to vote for "the lesser of two evils" will soon find himself under socialism. It is beyond time to turn the corner and begin voting for freedom principles.
This year is too important to be the year we keep heading down the path toward socialism. Today is the day we can decide, “No more.” Today is the day to determine that our children’s future is too precious to trust in the hands of an ever-expanding bureaucratic regime. This election year is the year to declare that you will not accept a version of “conservatism” that merely conserves what progressives were proposing a decade ago. Today is the day to begin taking back our government by supporting principled candidates!
